The Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN) has expressed its readiness to partner with Baze University, Abuja, to establish a Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Health Information Management (HIM).

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of HRORBN, Alhaji Babagana Mustapha, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by a delegation from Baze University led by the Provost, College of Medicine and Medical Sciences,Professor Muhammed Maku Sidi to the Board’s headquarters in Abuja.

Babagana described the University’s interest in the programme as a welcome development, noting that Baze University is the first university in the Federal Capital Territory to indicate commitment to offering a degree in Health Information Management.

He explained that while the National Universities Commission (NUC) is responsible for academic accreditation, HRORBN oversees professional training, regulation, standards, and licensing of Health Informational Management practitioners in Nigeria.

The Registrar assured the University of the Board’s full support, including the provision of professional guidelines and recommendations for qualified personnel to ensure the successful take-off of the programme.

“We will support Baze University to ensure the programme meets all professional requirements and standards for the training of competent Health Information Management professionals,” he said.

The Registrar advised the institution to formally communicate its intention to the Board, after which HRORBN would provide the necessary guidelines and accreditation requirements.

Earlier, the Provost, College of Medicine and Medical Sciences, Baze University, Professor Muhammed Maku Sidi, said the visit formed part of the University’s engagement with Regulatory Agencies under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

According to him, the University seeks HRORBN’s guidance on the establishment of the programme, particularly in the areas of manpower development, curriculum requirements, and professional standards.

“We want to ensure that the programme is established in line with regulatory requirements so that our graduates will be professionally recognized and eligible for licensing,” he stated.

The partnership is expected to expand opportunities for Health Information Management education in Nigeria and contribute to the production of skilled professionals needed to support the country’s healthcare system.
