EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

INTRODUCTION

The establishment of the Board was based on some goals and functions, the programme HIM is designed to provide graduates with suitable and up to standard learning environment with knowledge and skill of managing vital information required to assist in planning and delivery of comprehensive health care. Education Department seems to be one of the key Departments of the Board vested with the saddle of keeping institution up to standard.

PREAMBLE OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Education Department has been as old as the Board b itself, because of its major function and the reason the Board was established by Decree 39 of 1989 (CAP. H2 LFN 2004).

The Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN) was established by Decree 39 of 1989 (CAP. H2 LFN 2004).  The Education Department is as old as the Board itself; it’s one of the Departments that generate the Board’s revenue. It has Four (4) dynamic functional units as part of its day-to-day activities.

  1. Accreditation Unit
  2. Monitoring and Evaluation Unit
  • Induction Unit
  1. Planning and Curriculum Development Unit

The staff strength of the Department is Ten (10).

OUR WORK MISSION AS A DEPARTMENT:

  • To promote harmonious relationship between the Board and Health Information Management Institution across the Country.
  • To promote a culture of excellence in service delivery.
  • To ensure good working relationship between the Board and its stakeholders.

VISION STATEMENT AS A DEPARTMENT:

  • To establish professionalism and uniformity across Health Information Management Training Institutions.

FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT

  1. Upgrading Accreditation Status of Schools and Colleges under the Board.
  2. Confirming Accreditation Status of schools for Indexing.
  • Provision of fees/payment for all stages of Accreditation (Advisory Visit, Accreditation Resource Inspection).
  1. Maintain up to date feedback from schools on accreditation and data collation.
  2. Confirm and monitor that schools adhere to curriculum
  3. Work with the Professionals of the Board to develop, review and update curriculum.
  • Evaluating and analysing accreditation report for grant/approval from the Board back to the Schools.
  • Design training packages for both professionals and Board’s Staff.
  1. Monitoring of Schools’ and to ensure they adhere to their academic calendars.
  2. Updating Board’s schools database.
  3. To take care of Health Information Management in totality, serving as a link between the Board and the Schools.

ACHIEVEMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT

  1. Throughout the year we were able to create benchmark for the schools.
  2. There is increase and maintaining of standards.
  • Identified schools whose accreditation had expired and prepared the modalities to communicate such schools on the status of their accreditation.
  1. Maintained records of schools’ accreditation status on the basis of RHIMT, ND, HND and B.Sc all year round.
  2. All correspondences relating to accreditation (HRORBN and NBTE), introduction of new schools and other numerous related matters were swiftly dealt with.
  3. Furnishing the examination and Indexing Departments with requisite information on the accreditation statuses of schools in order to facilitate their operations.
  • Identified Schools running the HIM programmes without express approval from the Board and inviting them to do right thing.
  • Co-ordinated the accreditation of Twenty (20) schools within the year under consideration (see list attached).
  1. The Monitoring and Evaluation Unit have the Evaluation Reports from the just concluded NAHIMS convention.
  2. Letters of applications from various HIM programmes were resolved
  3. Application to be registered as a Health Records Officer.
  4. Application to be a member of HIM Professional body.
  5. Request for membership registration.
  6. Induction Unit, successfully carried out the induction of all fifteen (15) HIM institution cut across the zones.
  • We achieved the collaboration amongs other departments like Accounting Dept, the Store unit, License Unit, Registry Unit and all Zonal offices for a harmonious success.
  • Academic Planning and Curriculum Development were able to collect an up to date data as they are been notified by institutions.

PROMOTION

Promotion examination for 2023 was carried out successfully and three of the department staff participated and they all passed. Subsequently others will participate accordingly.

TRAINNING

The department staff had training on Accreditation once in 2023, which is below average. More is required, because Training is the main catalyst for sataff effective performance and efficiency. 

GOALS

  1. To increase the number of istitution to be accredited within a calendar year.
  2. To improve on the physical infrastructure of institutions through proper Resource inspection and accreditation visit.
  • To make sure institutions come forward for accreditation as at when due.
  1. To make sure the institutions adhere to the standard of HRORBN and Education Department guidelines.

OBJECTIVES

As one of the core important department of the Board all exercises carried out will be done without any compromise by the resource persons.

The general standard of the Board should be met by all institution during inspection visit, in other to give the students the required learning tools and environment. We as a department will always up hold the Boards reputation and integrity always.
